Serves

4 people

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup raw masoor dal

  • 1 tomato, chopped

  • 1 green chilli, chopped

(add more if you like it spicy)

  • 1 tbsp Tamarind Paste

  • 2 tbsp ASK Rasam Powder

  • 2 cups water

  • Salt to taste

  • 1 tsp turmeric powder

  • Coriander leaves for garnish

For the Tadka

  • 1 tsp rai (mustard seeds)

  • ½ tsp urad dal

  • A pinch of hing

  • 4–5 methi seeds

  • 7–8 curry leaves

  • 2 dried red chillies, slit

Method

  1. In a pressure cooker, add the cooked dal, water, tamarind paste, chopped green chilli, salt, tomato, and turmeric powder.

  2. Pressure cook for 3 whistles.

  3. Once cooled, open the lid and switch the gas back on.

  4. Add the ASK Rasam Powder and let it simmer for 10–12 minutes until all the flavours are well infused into the dal.

  5. If the consistency feels too thick, add water as needed and adjust the salt.

  6. Prepare the tadka with rai, urad dal, hing, methi seeds, curry leaves, and dried red chillies. Pour it over the rasam.

  7. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot.

Perfect with steamed rice, papad, or even as a comforting soup on its own.
